Trauma can profoundly influence an individual’s emotional, psychological, and physical development. The impact of traumatic experiences is often shaped by the developmental period in which they occur, with lasting implications for emotional regulation, relationships, and an individual’s sense of safety within their own body. Although traditional trauma treatments have largely emphasized cognitive and verbal processing, dance offers an additional therapeutic approach that recognizes the connection between the body and psychological healing.
This presentation explores dance as a trauma-informed intervention through the integration of developmental theory, neuroscience, and clinical practice. Drawing on research related to developmental trauma and the neurobiological effects of traumatic stress, the presentation examines how movement can support recovery in ways that may not be fully accessible through verbal interventions alone. Consideration is given to how traumatic experiences influence development across the lifespan and how dance-based approaches can be adapted to meet individuals where they are developmentally and emotionally.
The presentation will also explore the clinical application of dance within trauma treatment, including its potential to support the restoration of safety, connection, and personal agency. Particular attention will be given to the importance of approaching movement in ways that respect individual experiences, cultural differences, and the complexities of trauma recovery. By bringing together developmental research and clinical practice, this presentation offers a framework for understanding dance as a meaningful complement to established trauma treatments.
Dr. Sky Smith is an Associate Professor at Winona State University’s Department of Graduate Social Work. She is a licensed independent clinical social worker specializing in trauma treatment. Her work bridges clinical practice, teaching, and research with an interest in trauma and healing. Drawing on extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults, Dr. Smith integrates developmental theory, neuroscience, and evidence based therapeutic modalities into clinical and academic work. Her current scholarship explores the use of dance and movement as trauma informed interventions, with an emphasis on expanding traditional approaches to trauma treatment across the lifespan.
