Abstract:

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobehavioral disorder affecting school-age children and adolescents. ADHD is characterized by inattention, decreased self-inhibitory capacity and motor overactivity. ADHD is a risk factor for substance misuse, substance use disorder (SUD), and addiction in adolescents and adults. Treatment of ADHD with behavior therapy and stimulant medication is associated with reduced substance use risks. However, stimulant medications misuse can occur. Thus, early diagnosis and adequate treatment of children and adolescents with ADHD and counselling about the potential for SUD and addiction can decrease risk of addiction in adolescents and adults.
